As you find you need stuff, you apt-get it. Having a debian
mirror handy helps, though...

Most oses are very quick to use 4kB blocksizes on partitions with
non-trivial sizes. This is usually a good thing (it's quicker in
(almost?) every respect) but costs you a little bit of disk space.
Use a separate console window at install time and make them yourself
with 1kB blocks.
