[ILUG] IP Masq on Slackware 7.1

I'm getting really confused with this. Most of what I read refers to RedHat
configuration. 
 
What's the difference between ipfw and ipchains? 
What's the difference between ip_forward and ip_forwarding? 
Do I need to use rc.firewall? 

Any help much appreciated!
