[ILUG] POP-3 problem

Jesus this is starting to get annoying,
I have grep-ed inetd and etc/services and nothing strange
there,
I have bind running on the box and sendmail and I can telnet
to port 25 with no problems but I'm not getting the next
line which should be :
+OK POP3 host1 host2.....bla bla
But it never gets past the Escape char.... bit
it just waits a second and then comes back with:
Connection closed by foreign host.
I'm compleatly lost :-(
