Yeah, but this is assuming you can get to a root prompt to reset/reboot
it. If X just keeps cycling, you don't get this chance. Hmm, would
<ctrl><alt><bksp>, then <alt><F> to a new virtual terminal while X is
recycling leave X on the first screen? You'd have to be damn quick
though......

LILO supports selecting the runlevel at startup, right? You could use
that to get to your prompt and change the inittab.

Is the problem that the X login doesn't work, or just that you don't
like it?
