Righteo then I'll give out some numbers I verified at work on machines with
"unfair" specs, and on my home machine.

Home Machine hodgepodge linux 2.2 kernel, and originally a base redhat 5.2,
currently resembles nothing else on earth. 64megs of ram k6-2/333, i.e.
pathetic in comparison to the previous listed machines. 30 seconds from
pressing return to fully loaded on screen and responsive to menu click.
Granted that was an unloaded machine though, with civ ctp running wth a full
game (40megs mem) it took significantly longer up to two minutes.

Running 5.2 from remote solaris to local X has 8 seconds startup time, as does
the windows version. Ridiculous amounts of memory in those machines though, so
perhaps an unfair test, though both of those machine were running active
development sessions.

As an insane test I installed the latest binary release of OpenOffice on
skynet.ie and ran it through ssh X tunnel to my local display in germany, a
350+ ping away, and that has a startup time of 2 minutes 30 seconds to fullly
drawn, hardly usable though. This doesn't really prove anything, but was fun.

Conclusion from rough and dirty tests makes it look like ...
a) something odd where staroffice is taking much longer on your athlon in
comparison to my likkle personal linux box, my 30 secs for fully loaded vs your
splashscreen, perhaps this is a 5.2 improvement over your 5.1
b) something where linux staroffice is strangely slower than the solaris
version, perhaps a compiler or architectural issue ?
c) quite likely that the situation is improved further in the openoffice builds

Anyhow 30 seconds until splashscreen is out of all order, and the load time
difference between solaris and linux is intriguing.
