[ILUG] modem problems

 Hello all

 A friend at work asked me to get his modem working with his
 linux box. I had a crack at it but keep getting the error:

 TIOCMGET failed: Input/output error

 The machine is a 233 PII Dell
 The kernel is compiled for ppp and slip.
 I tried wvdial, minicom and kppp on /dev/ttyS0-3 and /dev/cua0-3
 and I still get no response. The serial port + modem works fine
 under windows, I even tried the modem on my machine and it works.

 I have tried everything obvious. Any ideas?
