   the script:  /etc/X11/gdm/Init/Default contains commands that will run when
   using gdm.  The default command is: /usr/X11R6/bin/xsetroot -solid "#363047"
   you should be able to change this to whatever backgrond you wish, even
   use another program to change the background image (eg replace the xsetroot
   command with: 'xv -quit -root <image file>'
