[ILUG] Nokia phones and Linux

I use the Motorola Timeport 7089 ... before I you read any further, I use
IR. Cables are too much hassle/expensive to lose.

Good bits about the 7089:
IR - strong signal, wide arc, always connects
nifty features - vibra-alert, voice recognition, voice recorder
    low weight
good battery - Li-ion based, get 5x24hrs between recharges with light
usage.
price - down to £69 with upgrade/new contract.
tri-band - worldwide phoning, including large sections of the US and all
of SE Asia.

Bad bits:
the UI sucks big time. The Motorola phone UI is due for an overhaul
bigtime. It's not intuitive, and on a phone with as many features as the
7089, finding what you need can be tricky.
limited ring-tones, no uploading of new ring-tones.
no fax via IR - you need an active cable, at over £100 .

Works well with the Palm. One must have app is GSMtool - manage your phone
numbers, SMS messages and other cool stuff. Only $20 shareware. I also use
it for occasional mail collection when I'm away, and occasional telnet
access. No ssh or webmin client yet though :)

If you can live with the UI, then it's well worth considering. There's also
a 7389 WAP version available, but who uses WAP?

Just while we're talking about mobile phones: I want to buy a mobile phone
that I can use with my Palm pilot - I've heard that certain vendors produce
a cable that can connect from the data port on the phone to the serial port
on the palm - I DON'T WNAT TO USE IR - I know it can be done, but it's just
not practical.
