Indeed - it just won't work.

In an ideal world. But it seems that his mail machine is just going to use
dialup, so can hardly be a primary MX. And having an ISP handle
any_old_user at myschool.ie is going to cost some money, which I imagine he's
trying to avoid by using Eircom. 

It can of course be done with Eircom, (or Unison, or Indigo . . .) but some
poor sod is going to have to create the accounts. Of course he could arrange
that the pupils do it themselves and just pass him on the relevant
information - bound to go wrong for somebody though.
