[ILUG] lost link beat

Hi All,
I'm trying to get a linux laptop up on the network for a friend in work and
running into a bit of a problem.
The pcmcia card appears to come up ok and cardmgr starts. This loads the
3c589_cs module, and sets its static IP. when I try pinging another machine on
the network TX packets are recorded on both the eth0 and lo interfaces but no
RX packets appear on the eth0. netstat -rn does instruct it to use eth0 for
the IP address. The ping fails of course with destination host unreachable,
and no lights even appear on the pcmcia connector (well I guess they should
flash when there is activity right? :) )
The only error I can find is in the messages, right after the messages about
the PCMCIA card coming up:
eth0: lost link beat
Kernel is 2.2.14-5.0, Redhat 6.2, card is a 3c589, Laptop is an IBM ThinkPad
600
Anyone seen anything like this before?
Cheers,
~Al
