Hmmm... drop it back to text mode, leave it a couple of hours to settle to
a nice even running temperature, and then compile the kernel 10 times
back-to-back.

My guess is that it'll fail with signal 11 errors at some point during
those compiles, and my best guess for the culprit here would be insufficient
cooling of the CPU.

Get thermal paste, and make sure that the fan is powerful enough and 
isn't limping. Blow all of the dust out of the cooling fins (this can make
several *degrees* of difference, measured with a thermal probe, so don't
laugh), and try the system again.
