[ILUG] Email -> SMS gateway

More to the point, is there SMS server software that can be run from a linux
box:  I'm thinking software dials a modem which dials my mobile and passes
SMS messages to me - surely this type of thing should be around?  How does
SMS work anyway?  Is it a store and forward system from your operator?  Can
I decide who my operator is?  10p per message seems extreme for a few
bytes - what are my options?
