[ILUG] kde problems!

Hi,
I've been installing new programmes recently.
Now I can't run kde.
When I start kde I get the following.
A dialog box in the middle of the screen with
"Could not find mime typw application/octet-stream"
When I click OK I get anoth box with
"No mime types installed!"
WHen I click OK a few icons appear on the left-hand side of the screen
The icons are all a drawing of some guy saying "Hi! I am Claude"
The text below the icons are 
Trash
Autostart
Templates
Netscape
Printer
Floppy
CD-ROM

No task bar appears at the top or bottom of the screen.

I am running SuSE 6.4, and I have removed the Kde rpms and re-installed
them, all to no avail.

Any ideas on how to fix this.
