I use lame with the optiond '-h -ms -b64' or '-h -mm -b32'; the latter
is good for most music with mainly voice and/or few instruments. You
can squeeze down the size of music quite a lot if you have real cheap,
low quality earbuds ;)

The latest lame actually has pretty good variable bitrating, which is
worth investigating. The previous few lame releases made the files
incredibly big with VBR activated, but things are improving slowly.
