mr. apple, meet mr. orange.  multiple processes accessing a tty is trivial
and yet even it is frequently annoying.  for instance my problem with
mutt a few weeks back.

multiple processes accessing sound cards is *not* trivial.

now, if you would like a good example of multiple processes accessing a
non-trivial device we might consider video cards.  to which the solution
is x.

now, do i use lsmod or ps to find my x server?  hm...

and the multiple process access in user space *is* solved in userspace.
i know of three solutions: rplay, esd and ncd audio.  since none of them
is standard, audio access is a problem for many apps.

there is a lesson here for the anything but x crowd...
