[ILUG] pam problem? no console login, but rlogin ok....

I had this problem once and no solution worked.
I just switched off the machine and booted again and 
everything was fine....I know it doesn't explain why it happens
and there might be a more sophisticated solution out there...but it
helped:-)

Wild guess...

Has the box been r00ted?  Stuff enabled that used to be disabled and
stuff
diasbled that used to be enabled and things.  Don't know offhand where
the
"how to figure out if you've been rooted and what to do" website is but
it's out there somewhere...
