Richard,

   You might take a look at the 'Advanced Bash Scripting' tutorial:

      http://personal.riverusers.com/~thegrendel/abs-HOWTO-0.3.tar.gz

   Don't be put off by the 'Advanced', it's also got lots of introductory
   stuff as well.

   As the name says, it deal with shell scripting specifically in 'bash'.
   You did not mention which shell you had in mind, but 'bash' is probably
   the most widely used shell in Linux, and is pretty good for scripting.

   (uh-oh, could this last comment lead to an outbreak of Shell Wars ...?)
