[ILUG] Building a new kernel

Hi there,
I have been off the list for a while, so sorry if this has been covered
recently.
Here's the background - I have installed SUSE 7.0 and now want to set up
BRU to do some tape backups. When I run install.sh I am told that I
need SCSI tape support in the kernel - fair enough. However, when I add
it and compile the new kernel the size is something like 500k instead of
the 800k of the existing kernel. Then when I go to boot the kernel I
get all sorts of stange things happening, like no SCSI devices found
followed by a kernel panic (presumably since the machine only has scsi
drives). I am able to back out and restore the old kernel, so it's not
a major problem.
Here's the problem - how can I recompile the kernel using the existing
config and just add SCSI tape support (or am I already doing that and
just don't know) ? There is an option to load and save kernel configs,
but I can't seem to find any other than the one I saved.
Thanks,
David
