Carolan Goggin's [soulcakeduck at oceanfree.net] 24 lines of wisdom included:
:>I'm a complete Linux beginner so my question may be incredibly stupid, but it's
:>the only way I'll learn - don't laugh.
:>Last week I installed Linux Mandrake 7.0.
:>When I'm connecting to the internet using gnome-ppp I get an error message
:>saying "The pppd daemon died unexpectedly". I have no idea what this means. I
:>checked that all the information I had in was correct (I'm using Oceanfree).
:>Then I attempted to connect using Kppp. I entered exactly the same information
:>and this time it works.
:>It's not really a problem as such, but I'd like to know why this is happening
:>and if I'm doing something really stupid.
Check if "modem" is part of /etc/ppp/options, afaik some versions of
gnome-ppp don't add this onto the pppd options. Kppp probably does.
I know that sorted a problem one of my friends had with it, but I
don't use gnome-ppp or Kppp. Try a tail -f /var/log/messages or
/var/log/ppp.log just before you're connecting and see if anything
interesting comes up if that doesn't work.
