do you have the code to time it? i'll try it at home. it is slower,
yes.

nscd. run that, and the first ls will be slow. thereafter it will be
just as fast as local passwd.

however nscd doesn't always gracefully handle the LDAP server being
unavailable. usually it does, but on the odd occasion it needs to be
restarted if LDAP was restarted.
