Potato's kernel is 2.2. There are packages for 2.2.18pre21 in stable,
but I don't know if it's a default; 2.2r0 uses 2.2.17pre6. If Debian
shipped 2.4, you can be sure that they would have all required
packages set as depends for the kernel package. They tend not to miss
things like that.
In any case, I'm pretty sure the problem is that CHAP needs to be
turned on.
