Well, despite your dislike of C++, I really think it's a far better
language to write GUI applications in than C; the class structures of
the language, combined with a well-designed toolkit, map themselves
very neatly onto GUI concepts.
YMMV, of course.
QT is a little more portable then GTK. This probably isn't
significant.

The Qt Free Edition *is* GPL - you have the choice of either using the
QPL or the GPL when using it. See

They won't be able to change this license retrospectively.
