I have a @33MHz K6-II box running SuSE7 with their default 2.2.16 kernel. On
that box I have a 55GB ReiserFS using LVM to merge a 40GB and an 18GB disk.
It's running knfsd and I just copied 40GB of files to it getting a
throughput of 2MB per second on a 100Mb network - 20% of wire speed is OK
for NFS in my experience (I've seen write speeds of well < 100 KB/s onto Sun
servers on 10Mb networks). I wouldn't really call that unusable, but of
course SuSE have probably got it patched up nicely.
