Can't say I use linuxconf myself or redhat for that matter and this is
starting to sound like something quite specific to RH7.2 so I think I'm no
longer in a position to help here.  

The most rigorous thing to do probably is to look in the init scripts, see
where they point to and trace back through whatever subscripts where the 
settings are coming from (ie what config files).  That way you know you're
changing the right ones.  The danger with linuxconf or any other config
tool is that you don't have to know what they're doing, so if they break
something or fail, you're in the manure business unless you know how to
edit them by hand.
