[ILUG] USB keyboard

I have an Inspiron 8000 running SuSE 7.2 with kernel 2.4.4 and I plugged in
a USB keyboard and it just worked - almost :-( It has a UK layout but it
seems that it's a Macintosh idea of UK layout (well, it is an iMac
keyboard). So shift-2, for example, produces " which is the character which
is shift-2 on the internal keyboard, but on the USB keyboard the chracter
there is actually @ (so it seems that the USB keyboard is a bit of a bizarre
US-UK hybrid). Does anyone know if there's a way around this (apart from
the trivial solution of buying another USB keyboard :-) ? I suppose the
general question is if there can be a different keyboard layout for the USB
and internal keyboard ? I have to say that my initial googling doesn't make
me very confident but I live in hope . . .
