[ILUG] What does 'Changing network settings' mean in simplest
of all cases?

(Firstly, none will get upset/hurt, the odd flame occurs but all blows over
in about 10 minutes anyway)
Don'tt know where you are coming from man, I installed a box here last
night, have not rebooted yet - its a server (Proliant 800), have run netconf
/ linuxconf from root, changes have been made automagically - cept the host
name but a wee /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart will sort that out.
In fact, I have just tested this for you and it works. Hostname was
localhost.localdomain (default), now is called the very original name of
"pl800"
Ip have been changed too from (my mistake) DHCP to static IP. I did the old
click click click during install :), but its working now.
I have not experienced the problems you have and I have done a few installs
of said distro.
The only thing I can think of is that you did not "manually" restart the
services, I would not rely on linuxconf to start them automagically.
The fact that a reboot fixes the problem leads me to believe that that is
exactly the issue.
so run : /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
and let me know if you still have hassle. I have only this morning tested
this so should be cool.
And a wee story...
You think you are having problems. I migrated + downgraded several box's in
my HAN. All services that were previously nicely distributed over several
nodes. Proxy / firewall / apache / samba / blah blah - for a HAN it was
ridiculous anyway. So got everything back and lost nothing at all thanks to
good planning and all that shite.
So all was put on one box as I say, and then it dies "mysteriously"
Bloody computers...
To cut a long story short, my son - again - poured his "bobo" down the back
of the box and short circuited it. It was the dried residue
(I think its milk) that gave it away :)
Would anyone like to adopt a lovely child? Only one owner? Please :)
Now I have no internet - on the plus side, eirCON cannot charge me :)

Hi,
I do not wish to hurt anyone, but I was a bit dis-appointed at the kind
of response that I got from ILUG members. All I asked was 'How can I change
network settings like IP/ netmask under RHL 7.2, without rebooting the
system after making the changes. This is because Linuxconf does not work
properly. And so does /etc/init.d/network restart. New IP/netmask is applied
only when I reboot the system'.
But I got a lot of vague answers. Some asked 'What exactly do you mean.
What are you trying to change ?'
I ask 'What does "changing network settings" mean in simplest of all
cases?'
