Take a look at the new RFC I mentioned. It does, unfortunately, specify
that the underscore is now required.

Sadly, not many clients do support it.

There is talk about adding it to Mozilla, but it seems to be primarily talk
at the moment. Dealing with the failover issues when you're talking about
an ephemeral protocol like HTTP isn't as easy as it sounds.
But it really would be nice if this would happen. With SRV records, I'd
finally accept the idea of <http://wunsch.org/> being a reasonable sort of
URL.
