[ILUG] ISDN routing problems

I have set up a SuSE 7.2 box which will be using an ISDN card for net
access. I want it to autodial but it's not playing i.e. it doesn't bring up
the link when I ping an nuknown address, as it should. Yast2 sets the ISDN
up with addresses of 192.168.0.99 and 192.168.0.1 (local and remote ends of
the IPPP link) and sets a default route via 192.168.0.1. However, the ISDN
connection uses dynamic IP so when it comes up it gets addresses like
a.b.c.d and a.b.c.e to the routing doesn't work unless I delete the default
route via 192.168.0.1 before the link comes up - then default routing gets
set up correctly.

This is all fine and dandy for manual dialling, but it doesn't work with
dialmode auto. Then the only way to make the line come up automatically is
to ping the remote end of the IPPP link viz. 192.168.0.1. Presumably if I'd
left that as the default gateway pinging a remote address would bring up the
link because it'd try to go via 192.168.0.1 but that would be useless
because eventually the remote end of the IPPP link doesn't have that
address. I've done this a number of times before, and it usually works fine,
so WTF is going on here ?
