I have a Dell Dimension P166MMX at home
- i hadexactly the same problem with mine
not detecting memory above 64MB... quite
interesting. I still use that pc quite a lot,
great workhorse.. it owes me nothing.
But yea a machine of that era is probably
well past upgrades at this stage unless you
can get stuff free or can canabalise another machine
etc.
One thing that you will also need to check out is
how much video memory you have. I had a 2 MB card
in the aforementioned Dell, and it really struggled
to run X reasonably. I think you need 4 MB minimum if
you're using linux as a workstation/desktop (it probably
depends on the quality of the card etc also). People
tend to overlook video cards when reviving older machines
as Linux boxes.

I had a DELL P166MMX that took SDRAM, but it couldn't see
more than 64MB of it. (I had one 32MB chip and one 128MB
chip in the machine). So basically, unless
you provide more information (motherboard chipset, exact
memory type etc) it's hard to answer your questions...
Also be aware that older 72 pin memory may not be as cheap
as modern stuff which is being produced in large quantities.
Upgrading the machine may be a waste of money.
