I've seen this one before. No where to put a DVD drive or LCD w/
buttons.

Any 1/2U cases I've seen are 19" wide. Most stereo equipment is approx
43cm (about 17") wide. This means it won't fit in my nice rack.
The option on junked HiFi has also been followed, but not with much
vigor. I've been to three or four repair shops to see if they would be
willing to give/sell me a dead CD player or something. They all had a
different excuse of why the can't do that. Bizzare. So it's on the back
burner for a while.
On the software side, there is a company called imerge(.co.uk) that have
developed a "PC" home hifi component called SoundServer. They use a
piece of software called XiVA or something (www.xiva.com, seems to be
down at the moment.) I believe it's Linux based with nice GUI etc. I
think you can download it. You used to be able to anyways.
