Well, you're talking to *something*.

My best guess would be you're talking 38400/8/N/1 while the phone's
configured for something else, so data is being exchanged but it's
showing up as gibberish.

CTRL-A-P will show you the current config, and you can change the
local line speeds to synch with whatever the phone is set to. Read
the docs that came with the phone to find out what it's default port
speed and settings are.

Once you've got the config happy, don't forget to save it, and then
it'll work automatically when you run minicom next time.
