What does mii-tool show before you lose the connection?

Try mii-diag (mii-tool is a cut down version of mi-diag), which can be 
downloaded from http://www.scyld.com/diag/. You'll need mii-diag.c and 
libmii.c to complie.

Try using a different port on the hub. Might be that your port is dodgy, or 
the cat5. After that try borrow another pcmcia nic and see if that makes a 
difference. Something  might be causing the card to re-negotiate. Watch the 
link lights on the hub and nic.
