What's the BIOS doing?  If it won't let you disable LPT, you may be
screwed, because then it's already marked as being in use before Linux
gets booted.

What's the nature of the beast/NIC?  I have met a problem with some
braindead cards that *refuse* to use 7, because <sound of shotgun being
loaded> *everybody* knows <click> that it's being used by LPT1. <BANG>
