For what it's worth, the same thing happens on campus. (Me, I'm retired
and financially somewhere between independent insolvent, so it matters
not.) But quality and students suffer. Watching campus politics, I get
the feeling that they'd rather have a 3rd-rate native than a 1st-rate
foreigner, but not being willing to admit this, go through all sorts of
contortions to make life difficult for foreigners. At least this
consistently happens in oceanography.
When my internet-connected Powerbook died of disk leprosy, Computer
Services took 14 weeks to connect my replacement iMac to the same plug in
the wall, and seemed to think that this was perfectly acceptable for a
10-minute operation. Occasional students who work for them show flashes of
ability, but immediately disappear into the private sector. I don't know
how to arrange it, but I'd like to see some (1) competence and (2)
awareness of something other than Windows around here. There may not be
employment opportunities here, but there's sure a need!
Cheers,
