Sorry just re-read that and realised how unclear I was.

The machine will call the device something like /dev/hda or /dev/hdb etc.
automatically.

1. It's common to link a more obvious name to that device eg /dev/dvdrom
although this is purely optional. eg

ln -s /dev/hdb /dev/dvdrom

2. You need a mount point, a directory through which you'll access the
files.  Commonly /mnt/dvdrom or /dvdrom

mkdir /dvdrom

3. In order to just say mount /dvdrom and expect it to be mounted
automatically, add a line in /etc/fstab telling it the device
(/dev/dvdrom), the mount point (/dvdrom), the filesystem (usually auto will
let it autodetect this) and some other options.

/dev/dvdrom	/dvdrom	  auto	defaults,ro,user,noauto	  0  0

that's a bit more clear, sorry.
