or for a slightly more realworld result, get a hold of bonnie
(http://www.textuality.com/bonnie/index.html) and run it. On a box with a
500 MHz K6-III I got this from hdparm on a 40GB IBM ATA-4 disk

/dev/hdg:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  2.07 seconds = 30.92 MB/sec
 
and this from bonnie
