Its all tantamount really. These drives, whether they state 12x, 32x,
64x etc etc, the trouble is, they take time to spin up to the max speed
stated on the box. If you are talking about streaming large files off a
CD, then I wold imagine that one could achieve the higher range.
However, for installatios etc, there are frequently thousands of smaller
files and the drive is stopping and starting all over the shop. So one
ends up with only 12x anyway. 

DVD's are not that different than CDROM drives. They simply have a more
pits on the CD and so we get larger capacity. But the drive still has to
spin up. 

If you are watching a movie, then a 2x drive will play it at the same
speed as a 16x or whatever the latest one are.

 A 66 speed CDROM will do 10MB/sec....not sure how easy they are to get,
but a 52x one should be easy enough...
