There is a suite of tools which can read various kinds of HFS disks - just
everything except original 800K Mac floppies which PC hardware can't read.
You can also compile HFS support into the kernel - read
/usr/src/linux/fs/hfs/FAQ.txt and any kind of recent distribution will
probably have the hfs module available - this SuSE 7.2 box does. 

I can testify that it works well having copied tens of gigs of JPEGs from
Mac CDs via my Linux box.

What do you mean exactly ? You could mount the CD as ISO and then as HFS and
look at the data you see in whatever way you like - Perl would by weapon of
choice but let's not start a scripting language war.
