[ILUG] True type fonts have disappeared :-(

Does the output of 'xset q' mention the True Type directory in the
font path? If not, put it in the config file. Does your TrueType
directory have proper fonts.scale and fonts.dir files? If not,
# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType # Or wherever your TT fonts are
# ttmkfdir > fonts.scale # Ignore messages about 'unknown foundry'
# ttmkfdir may need FreeType & stuff to
# compile, though I'm sure S.U.S.E supply it
# in competent rpm form.
Now `fonts.dir' should be identical to fonts.scale , and contain
several entries (different character sets) for each font. Note that
the Unicode encodings (*-iso10646-1) aren't listed; I tried loading MS
Arial Unicode in Netscape once upon a time *as* unicode, and it locked
the server for a couple of minutes. The X font querying algorithim is
madly inefficient for 16 bit encodings at the moment.
$ xset +fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType # Again, or wherever.
$ xset fp rehash # To get things running again.
If it's XF 4, the log file should be in /var/log/XFree86.0.log
. (Could be different for Linux.) It'll mention TrueType, FreeType etc
if it's loading them. Should save you looking at access times :-) .
