Why, upgrade to Emacs of course. I have encountered this problem on numerous
Unices and numerous versions of vi over the years - seems to be because a
cursor key press sends ESC followed by some other keys, and eventually this
gets interpreted by vi as a C, or an A, or whatever. Never seen it happen
with emacs . . . .
