Interesting quotation:

Even those of us in the USA find our communications (legally)
scrutinised by the NSA, when it crosses borders -- or probably even when
it goes through uplinks that service overseas connections.

I wouldn't doubt it.  Remember, gnupg, OpenSSH, and SSL are your
friends.
