My understanding of this is that they agree on a convention of exactly how
they will hide the data within the image.  For example, in the least significant
bit  which describes the color of a pixel within an image.  You'd never notice
that anything was off in the image yet the hidden message would be there
nonetheless.

You'd have to have an intimate understanding of the file format of the image
you were working with and all image formats wouldn't be a candidate.  I'm
not sure if GIF would be a viable candidate since it stores it's color table
at the beginning.

Anyway, this is really only useful if you're trying to hide the fact that you
are communicating on the sly.

Pretty cool and pretty devious stuff.
