how good stenography systems work on data files,
is to change to low order bit in , say , every tenth
data byte, the end result is some pixels are ever so
slightly off colour, and the human eye tends not to pick it up.
as far as security goes, there is nothing to stop you encrypting
your data , and then hiding it in an image.

Very very true, and my favourite rot13 does not count as crytography no
matter how much the DMCA would like it too.
rot13 and caesar are in /usr/bin/games if you dist bothered to install
BSD games.
As for Stenography from what ive heard you want to take a look at Out
Geuss, it is supposed to be very hard to detect, it works out how large
a message you can hide without giving it away.

Of course JPG (and probaby Gif and png) have support for a comment
field, and you could just use that to hide a message. There are so very
few programs that allow you to set the comment and anyone who wanted to
see the message could simply open the image using a text (or hex) editor

im nit picking but to avoid confusion it is best to call it disk space
and refer only to RAM as memory.
