[ILUG] XFree86 4.1.0 and kernel 2.4.9 probs

Whats the output of DMESG? what about /var/log/messages? 

Does the drive work then fail? at what point exactly does this happen? 
What is the drive set to M/CS/SL?

Are there any oops'?

 For X, check out: /var/log/XFree86*log*

 As for the kernel...back it out & try a different one.
