I use diald and doze doesn't cause spurious dialups but I _did_ have to set
up a local nameserver to acomplish this. At least, I think I did. I'm not
sure if the local nameserver or the "ignore udp" setting in the diald rules
is responsible. I do notice that while mozilla'ing, I'll be viewing a site,
spend some time reading but not clicking links, the net connection goes down
and I later exit mozilla whereupon it tries to contact the site I was at to
wave goodbye thus triggering a dialup (most irritating!).
One possibility is creative use of firewall rules to deny internet access to
the doze box unless the net link is already up. Easily accomplished with a
rule blocking the doze box from the net and a ppp0 link up script that
deletes that particular rule from the firewall and restores it when the net
link goes down.
