The way that OS X does it then?

At least, from Terminal, programs in /Applications look like
Terminal.app/Contents/MacOS/Terminal

and in Finder, you don't see any of that, just the Terminal icon.

I haven't checked, but IIRC they called them bundles.

how does this deal with the program of shared libraries? You either have to
replicate every library that program uses (could be massive, every program
coming with it's own version of libc!) or still have library dependencies.
