I'm sure somebody could dig out a nice newbie friendly 
web based java irc client.... 

I think irc would be more complementary rather than a 
replacement for this list.

Let me second that!  I'm on home dial-up, which is why anything I ever post
(all
of, ooh, 5 things so far....) is usually done waaay post 6 pm.  If
everything
goes to irc, I'm locked out.

I would also like to hoist (oh yes! :-) the old bleat of "it'll discourage
newbies!" if the principal interaction is real-time.  They may not know
about
IRC, they may be on dial-up, they may have to look up "gcc" in the
dictionary....
Barriers to entry, and all that.
