I'm curious how you know there was something _besides_ bitmaps in it.

In the document that occasioned all this dicussion, I could find no
ASCII whatsoever, unless you count about 40 ctrl-L (formfeed)
characters.  It's possible that the standard Ghostscript tools (e.g.,
pdf2ps and ps2ascii) were unequal to the task of parsing the document.
That strikes me as an open question.

If you're saying there was metadata -- and, specifically, text -- in
that PDF, have you extracted it?  Using what tools?
