Ha ha, thats what happens when I look at things before 8 am !!!! 

Your totally correct , I didn't test the thing on postfix, I was just testing 
it line by line so I tested the line ....

tee $tmpf | $program_directory/smtpd

and it hung .... 

but I should have put in the full line ... 
tee $tmpf | $program_directory/smtpd (cat $tmpf | nc $otherserver -p 25) && rm 
$tmpf

What a muppet !!!!!
