I use:

mpg123 as a player	http://www.mpg123.de 

v quick command line util although without much of the functionality of
freeamp/xmms.

grip as a ripper 	http://nostatic.org/grip/
	(which in turn uaually uses cdparanoia & lame/toolame)

nice. Integrates with online cd databases etc.  I always find it
surprisingly slow, although perhaps it's a problem on my machine.
